What This Study Did, in Plain Language

What Was Tested

In this phase 2 trial, researchers set out to test Oxytocin.

This is a study of participants that will receive intravenous (IV) infusions of oxytocin (naturally occurring hormone that is made by the brain).

There will be 3 study related visits: 1) screening and informed consent 2) study medication infusions and thermal heat testing 3) study medication infusions and thermal heat testing.

It had two arms (groups): one (experimental) and one (experimental).

The registry classes the interventions as drug.

More on the Plan

Equal numbers of adult men and women; ages 18-75 will be recruited.

Participants will report to the research unit for three visits, 1) screening and informed consent 2) study medication infusions and thermal heat testing 3) study medication infusions and thermal heat testing separated by at least 72 hours.

For study infusion visits, study participants will come to the Clinical Research Unit and one intravenous (IV) catheter will be inserted in the forearm for oxytocin infusions.

The order of study days will be randomized and double-blinded.

Who Took Part

25 actual participants took part.

It was open to people of any sex aged from 18 years up to 75 years.

Healthy volunteers could join, not only people with the condition.

Examples of who could join: Male or female \> 18 and \< 75 years of age, Body Mass Index (BMI) \<40.

The full record lists 4 inclusion and 8 exclusion criteria; among the exclusions: subjects with neuropathy, chronic pain, diabetes mellitus, or taking benzodiazepines or pain medications on a daily basis; subjects with current or history of ventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation or prolonged qt interval; subjects with a known latex allergy.

How the Study Was Run

Design: randomized, crossover and triple-blind.

Because people in this Oxytocin study were split into groups at random, differences between the groups are less likely to reflect who happened to join each one.

Each person switched between Oxytocin and the comparison at some point, usually with a gap in between.

Neither the participants nor the staff measuring them knew who was on Oxytocin, so expectations could not easily colour the readings.

Those kept unaware of assignments: participant, investigator and outcomes assessor.

It started in 2022-05-09 with completion listed for 2023-02-10.

It ran at 1 site in United States.

Its stated primary purpose is basic science.

What This Means in Plain Language

Put simply, this is a phase 2, randomized trial of Oxytocin in 25 people.

Its size is small, so on its own it can only give an early look.

The trial is marked completed; results are posted on the registry, and this page does not restate them.

Our Notes on the Compound

Oxytocin: A peptide hormone with established obstetric medical uses and a less settled role in research on behavior, sexual function and appetite.
