What This Study Did, in Plain Language

What Was Tested

This registered not phased trial tested Carnosine.

Carnosine is a dipeptide synthesized in the body from β-alanine and L-histidine.

It was originally discovered in skeletal muscle where it is present in larger amounts than in other tissues, but it is also found in high concentrations in the brain, heart, and gastrointestinal tissues of humans.

Although its physiological role has not been completely understood yet, carnosine is a non-enzymatic free-radical scavenger and a natural antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.

It had two arms (groups): Carnosine (experimental) and Control (placebo comparator).

Intake of carnosine supplement in form of capsules or functionally enriched chicken meet for three weeks.

Intake of placebo capsules or regular chicken meet for three weeks.

The registry classes the interventions as dietary supplement.

Who Took Part

Enrollment: 100 planned participants were the target.

It was open to people of any sex aged from 18 years up to 39 years.

Healthy volunteers could join, not only people with the condition.

Examples of who could join: Young healthy sedentary individuals - did not perform regular physical activities for at least 12 months before conducting the study. Young healthy active athletes - have a minimum of 5 training sessions per week (mainly endurance training) for at least 12 months prior to conducting the study.

The full record lists 2 inclusion and 8 exclusion criteria; among the exclusions: coronary disease; kidney damage; cerebrovascular and peripheral artery diseases.

How the Study Was Run

The set-up was randomized, parallel-group and double-blind.

Because people in this Carnosine study were split into groups at random, differences between the groups are less likely to reflect who happened to join each one.

Groups ran in parallel: each of the participants stayed in one arm throughout.

Neither the participants nor the staff measuring them knew who was on Carnosine, so expectations could not easily colour the readings.

Those kept unaware of assignments: participant and investigator.

It started in 2022-09-01 with completion listed for 2023-12-31.

It ran at 1 site in Croatia.

Its stated primary purpose is basic science.

What Was Measured

Primary outcome: Microvascular endothelial function (time frame: 3 weeks). Macrovascular endothelial function (time frame: 3 weeks). Cerebrovascular reactivity (time frame: 3 weeks).

It also tracked 10 secondary outcomes, for example Lipid profile, Oxidative stress status, Systemic hemodynamics, Serum Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Cytokines, Chemokines, Growth Factors and Soluble Cell Adhesion Molecules Protein Concentration, Body composition and Body fluid status.

What This Means in Plain Language

Put simply, this is a not phased, randomized trial of Carnosine in 100 people.

Its status is unknown; no results are posted to the registry yet, so nothing here describes outcomes.

Our Notes on the Compound
