What This Study Did, in Plain Language
What Was Tested
This registered not phased trial tested NAD+.
Unfortunately, in human adults, the functionality of brown fat declines with age, and it is one of the reasons for gaining unhealthy weight, particularly around the waistline (central obesity).
Currently, scientists do not clearly understand the reasons for the decline in brown fat functionality.
It had two arms (groups): Placebo (placebo comparator) and Oral NAD+ precursor supplementation (experimental).
The registry classes the interventions as dietary supplement and other.
Who Took Part
The registry lists 68 planned participants were the target.
It was open to people of any sex aged from 30 years up to 65 years.
Healthy volunteers could join, not only people with the condition.
Examples of who could join: Willingness to provide informed consent to participate in the BATNAD study. Must be able to read and speak English/Finnish/Swedish well enough to completely understand the instructions and provide informed consent. Age 30-55 (sedentary lifestyle). BMI = 18-25 kg/m2 (normal-weight subjects). BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2 and waist circumference more than 100 cm in men and more than 90 cm in women (subjects with obesity).
The full record lists 5 inclusion and 22 exclusion criteria; among the exclusions: inability to have pet/ct (claustrophobia, metal implants, recent tattoo including metal components, weight \> 200 kg); pregnancy and pregnancy related conditions (postpartum/lactation during the last 12 months, or planning to become pregnant soon); major alterations in the menstrual cycle (e.g., amenorrhea).
How the Study Was Run
Design: randomized, parallel-group and open-label.
Random assignment meant chance, not the researchers, decided who got NAD+ and who got the comparison, which limits bias.
The NAD+ group and the comparison group ran side by side rather than switching.
Nothing was hidden in this open-label NAD+ study: the participants and staff both knew the treatment.
It started in 2024-11-20 with completion listed for 2027-08-31.
It ran at 1 site in Finland.
Its stated primary purpose is treatment.
What Was Measured
The main thing measured (primary outcome): Whole-body Insulin Sensitivity (time frame: 6 months).
It also tracked 1 secondary outcome, for example Brown adipose tissue glucose uptake rate.
What This Means in Plain Language
Put simply, this is a not phased, randomized trial of NAD+ in 68 people.
It is still recruiting; no results are posted to the registry yet, so nothing here describes outcomes.

Our Notes on the Compound
NAD+: The coenzyme that accepts electrons at complex I.
