What This Study Did, in Plain Language
What Was Tested
In this not phased trial, researchers set out to test Semaglutide.
The use of glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) may have clinically important effects on skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and physical function.
Additionally, most people treated with GLP-1-based weight loss medications stop taking these medications within 1 year of initiating treatment.
It had two arms (groups): GLP-1 RA (active comparator) and GLP-1 RA + Exercise (experimental).
Participants in this group will receive semaglutide therapy along with diet behavior counseling for 52 weeks.
Participants in this group will receive semaglutide therapy along with diet behavior counseling and exercise training for 52 weeks.
The registry classes the interventions as behavioral and drug.
Who Took Part
Enrollment: 40 planned participants were the target.
It was open to people of any sex aged from 50 years up to 75 years.
Healthy volunteers were not accepted; participants needed the condition being studied.
Examples of who could join: I) obesity (Body Mass Index ≥ 30 kg/m2). Iii) approval of their primary physician to participate in this study.
The full record lists 3 inclusion and 22 exclusion criteria; among the exclusions: ii) ≥150 min per week of structured exercise (e.g., jogging, activities that cause heavy breathing and sweating); iii) diabetes; v) therapy with a glp-1 or other weight loss medications.
How the Study Was Run
It was run as a randomized, parallel-group and single-blind study.
The participants were allocated by chance, so the Semaglutide group and the comparison group should start out alike.
Groups ran in parallel: each of the participants stayed in one arm throughout.
In this single-blind Semaglutide study one party knew the assignments and the other did not.
Those kept unaware of assignments: outcomes assessor.
It started in 2025-08-11 with completion listed for 2028-08-01.
It ran at 1 site in United States.
Its stated primary purpose is basic science.
What Was Measured
Primary outcome: Physical function (time frame: Baseline, after 52 weeks of intervention, and 52 weeks after stopping the intervention). Body composition (time frame: Baseline, after 52 weeks of intervention, and 52 weeks after stopping the intervention).
It also tracked 8 secondary outcomes, for example Muscle mass, Muscle volume, Insulin sensitivity, Muscular Strength for the Chest Press exercise, Muscular Strength for the Seated Row exercise and Muscular Strength for the Leg Press exercise.
What This Means in Plain Language
Put simply, this is a not phased, randomized trial of Semaglutide in 40 people.
It is still recruiting; no results are posted to the registry yet, so nothing here describes outcomes.
More context: the Semaglutide compound page, all human trials.
Our Notes on the Compound
Semaglutide: The active ingredient in several prescription GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines (Ozempic, Wegovy, oral tablets).
