What This Study Did, in Plain Language
What Was Tested
This randomized controlled trial looks at Vitamin D, K2, Magnesium and Zinc.
Homemade provitamin A carotenoids (PVACs), iron and zinc-rich complementary food (CF), common bean pumpkin blend (BPB) formulated from pumpkin (Sweet cream) and common bean (Obwelu) and PVAC-rich pumpkin blend (PB) from Sweet cream were prepared by expert peer mothers.
This study compared child acceptability of BPB and PB (control).
A paired t-test was used to determine the mean differences within participants between BPB and PB.
Why It Was Studied
Ugandan children are fed homemade complementary foods (CFs) which are usually deficient in vitamin A, iron and zinc.
Novel homemade CFs rich in vitamin A, iron and zinc need to be developed, and assessed for their acceptability among target children.
Who Took Part
PubMed indexes the participants as infants, young children and children, women only.
How the Study Was Run
In design terms this was a randomized and crossover study.
The participants were allocated by chance, so the Vitamin D, K2, Magnesium and Zinc group and the comparison group should start out alike.
In the crossover set-up each of the participants took both Vitamin D, K2, Magnesium and Zinc and the comparison in turn, acting as their own control.
The amount of CF consumed, duration of consumption, and micronutrient intake were assessed.
What Was Measured
Novel homemade CFs rich in vitamin A, iron and zinc need to be developed, and assessed for their acceptability among target children.
