What it is

Carbetocin is described as a synthetic analog of oxytocin (which has its own page) with a longer action. It is approved in many countries, not the US, for preventing postpartum hemorrhage.

Mechanism (as described)

  • It activates oxytocin receptors in the uterus and lasts longer than oxytocin.

Evidence (as described)

  • A WHO trial of nearly 30,000 women found heat-stable carbetocin non-inferior to oxytocin for preventing hemorrhage after vaginal birth (Widmer et al., N Engl J Med 2018). An intranasal trial reported reduced hyperphagia in Prader-Willi syndrome (Dykens et al., 2018).

Status

Approved outside the US for postpartum hemorrhage.
