What it is
Thymalin is described as a mixture of polypeptides extracted from calf thymus, registered in Russia since the 1980s as an immune-correcting medicine. It is distinct from the synthetic dipeptide Thymogen (Glu-Trp), which has its own page.
Most of its literature comes from Russian research groups, including long-term observational work with Epitalon (Khavinson et al., 2003).
Mechanism (as described)
- It is described as supporting T-cell maturation and balancing immune markers; a 2020 cell study reported activation of differentiation in human hematopoietic stem cells (Khavinson et al., 2020).
Evidence (as described)
- Human data include Russian clinical studies in immune-deficient and elderly groups; most are not randomized or are published only in Russian.
- It is not approved in the US or EU.
Status
Registered medicine in Russia; not approved in the US or EU.
